Mature and Sincere, Relaxed and Spontaneous.

By Sun Zhichun (Executive Director, Fujian Provincial Academy of Painting)

As a painter trained in Western art, I would like to share my impressions of Zeng Jinde’s exhibition. As Dean Fan mentioned, Zeng Jinde’s paintings are a profound outpouring of his soul, executed with extraordinary skill, spontaneity, and liberation from convention. His work is mature yet sincere, remarkably relaxed, and highly instructive for contemporary artists.

During the preparation of the 12th National Art Exhibition, artists often lost their relaxed mindset; each work appeared tense and overly intense. Viewing Zeng Jinde’s paintings, I realized that the most important thing in painting is personal joy. When the artist is happy, brushwork flows freely, naturally, and without constraint. As Director Rongsheng noted, concerns over marketability or audience approval can intrude and create a conventional, constrained result.

Zeng Jinde lived as a recluse in the mountains of Dehua, creating according to his inner state — drinking, writing poetry, painting, and calligraphy. Free from the pursuit of exhibitions or fame, he produced works of remarkable spontaneity and authenticity.

Additionally, I must mention Zeng Lu, his son. For this exhibition, he devoted himself fully to curatorial and preparatory work. Traditional exhibitions often use red banners, but he felt that this did not reflect his father’s temperament. Instead, he selected a work depicting a scene of firecrackers during the Lantern Festival, creatively using ink infused with wine to record the occasion and listing participating organizations. This approach was both thoughtful and innovative, reflecting his filial devotion and respect for his father’s art. The exhibition layout, catalogue design, and display panels all convey his meticulous care. Dean Fan Di’an also provided significant support, contributing a beautiful preface to the exhibition.
