This is the first art exhibition after the 2015 Spring Festival, and I am very pleased to see so many colleagues from Fujian’s art circles — especially my friends — as well as many enthusiastic audience members attending today. On one hand, contemporary Fujian artists need to devote more creative energy to express our times with their artistic passion. On the other hand, we also need to study the history of Fujian art — both ancient and modern — and, through understanding its important characteristics, build cultural confidence and transform traditional strengths into resources and motivation for today’s artistic creation. In this sense, Zeng Jinde’s exhibition occupies an important position for his era.

At first, I was unfamiliar with Mr. Zeng, and many of our art colleagues felt the same. Yet he truly is a local artist, living and working in Fujian, in Quanzhou and even Dehua. His life spans a period of development in our art history, particularly under conditions with limited academic resources and without extended formal training. Making a living was the main task for artists of his generation, yet Zeng Jinde’s life can be described as fully accompanied by art. Driven by artistic ideals, he left behind a substantial body of work. Although we may not know the exact circumstances or mindset of his creation, the paintings before us today reveal his soul, his life, his pursuit, and his desires — which is deeply moving.

I first saw many manuscripts and materials brought by his son, Zeng Lu, in Beijing. Zeng Lu has carefully organized his father’s legacy and collected documents to prepare for this exhibition. I believe organizing this exhibition is meaningful because Zeng Jinde is a true native Fujian artist. His works express his character and temperament, reflecting his feelings about life through brush and ink. This is admirable and represents an important local cultural heritage.

Through his works, we can discover many things: his love for traditional literati painting, how he transforms personal experiences and emotions into brushwork, and his bold exploration and innovation beyond traditional limitations. These explorations were not deliberately designed, but they reveal his genuine emotions and remarkable artistic courage. This is worthy of further discussion and study.

The realization of this exhibition owes much to the high attention of the Fujian Federation of Literary and Art Circles, especially Secretary Zhang Zuoxing, as well as the Fujian Artists Association, the Fujian Academy of Painting, Chairman Wang Laiwen, Director Guo Dongjian, and many colleagues who contributed greatly. I am deeply moved.

The development of Fujian art requires attention from the local art community and the broader cultural sector, to build a deeper understanding of its growth. I also look forward to hearing colleagues’ insights about Zeng Jinde’s art in the upcoming symposium. Holding this exhibition at the beginning of the Year of the Sheep, with the participation of the CPPCC Chairman and art colleagues, provides a good start for the new year of Fujian art. I wish the exhibition every success. Thank you all!
